Between History and Now: Wanda Lephoto at & Project Space

Wanda Lephoto is a Johannesburg-based designer, creative director and researcher whose work explores African identity through clothing, culture and storytelling. His practice is built on the idea that identity is plural, shaped by history, tradition, popular culture, memory and the everyday objects around us. Through fashion he brings these references into conversation, making work that asks what it means to be African, South African and contemporary at the same time. He works across ready-to-wear, styling, creative direction and research, and usually starts with something familiar: a garment, an image, a found object, an archive, a poster, a piece of furniture or a fragment of popular culture. These are recontextualised, transformed and given new meaning through clothing. At the centre of it all is an ongoing interest in how people and objects relate, how things carry memory and history, and how they can be reimagined through design.
