Design Week South Africa x Mission for Inner City Cape Town: UNBUILT Exhibition
ACTIVATION
UNBUILT is a new curated series by Design Week South Africa focused on the ideas, projects and emerging shifts shaping South Africa’s built environment.
This year’s UNBUILT exhibition, building on Design Week’s theme, The Shape of Us, brings together built-environment ideas, prototypes and projects exploring how South African precincts can become more connected, inclusive and people-focused.
Hosted at Mission for Inner City Cape Town’s latest third space at Short MARKET, the exhibition will include work around public furniture, modular third spaces, street experiments, parklets, public toilets, trading infrastructure and new approaches to precinct-making.
The exibition brings together designers, architects, developers, urbanists and organisations working across public space, mobility and the built environment. Contributors include dhk, Urban Think Tank Empower (UTTE), Yes& Studio, Studio Form, Young Urbanists NPC, Mission for Inner City Cape Town, Flat Rock Studio, Urban–Think Tank with Jeffrey James and other participants in the UNBUILT programme.
The exhibition launch will include an informal conversation with participating designers and organisations about what it means to rethink South African cities at both the precinct and street scale. dhk and Mission for Inner City Cape Town will open the evening, followed by conversation about the challenges and opportunities to make South African cities better.
The exhibition also forms part of a wider Design Week South Africa UNBUILT programme sponsored by dhk — connecting Shortmarket Street with site visits, talks and public-space interventions.
