Frauke Stegmann
ACTIVATION
Studio Frauke Stegmann is a design studio that develops projects with a particular interest in libraries, ecology, and the speculative. For Design Week Cape Town, the studio presents two activations exploring how knowledge, cultural practices and ecological heritage are preserved.
Activation 1 forms part of Preserve | Re-imagined, now in its second edition. This activation reflects on the survival practice of drying wild spinach, traditionally shaped into flat, round cakes known as ‘omboga’. Presented at the Bo-Kaap Museum, among other venues, the work takes the form of a printed recipe for visitors, allowing the knowledge carried by this practice to circulate beyond the exhibition space.
Activation 2 consists of a small site-specific intervention, created as a homage to the Critically Endangered Cape Flats Sand Fynbos. The intervention draws attention to the fragility of this unique ecological heritage and invite reflection on memory, loss, and preservation.
