In Conversation: Art × Fashion × Design
ACTIVATION
‘Art × Fashion × Design’ brings together the sculptural works of South African artist Nwabisa Ntlokwana, and the photographic practice of Ghanaian artist Hanardy Iddriss. Co-curated by Maropeng Maphala and Christina Fortune, this installation explores how contemporary African practices translate, transform and reconfigure inherited visual and material languages. Rather than treating heritage as something fixed or preserved, the works approach it as an active field — something to be manipulated, disrupted, reassembled and made contemporary.
Ntlokwana’s sculptural forms and Iddriss’s photographic images operate across different scales and materials, creating a conversation between object, image and architecture. Presented within BlackBrick, Iddriss’s photographs are expanded onto banners, shifting photography from an intimate image into an architectural intervention, while Ntlokwana’s sculptural works retain a physical, tactile presence within the space.
Together, the works propose a cross-continental exchange between South Africa and Ghana, one concerned less with shared histories than with the ways artists continually reinvent what African visual culture can look and feel like.
