Inkanyamba

ACTIVATION

Inkanyamba is an emerging South African fashion brand founded by fashion design graduate Zukiswa Mtshali.

For Design Week South Africa: Johannesburg, The Media Studio is transformed into an African fashion and art space that explores South African heritage and Zulu culture through the different roles within a bloodline. Using garments, moving visuals and illustrative art, the space tells a layered story of ancestry, identity and continuity, with each piece and image reflecting a position within the family line — elder, protector, twin, child, visionary — and how these roles shape one another across generations.

The industrial hall becomes a contemporary ceremonial ground, while the balcony opens the narrative to the city beyond, creating a dialogue between rooted tradition and present-day expression.

On the first day the bloodline is introduced through a soft opening, open viewing and a guided walkthrough that unpacks the different roles. The second day invites deeper conversation, featuring an artist talk with Zukiswa Mtshali alongside continued viewing and a shorter optional walkthrough. Together the garments, film, and illustration form a living archive of bloodline, pride and becoming.
