Joël Mamboka — Artist in the Kitchen Workshop

ACTIVATION

The Artist in the Kitchen workshop is an intimate, multi-sensory experience that merges fine art creation with authentic culinary tradition right inside Joël Mamboka’s studio.

Joël Mamboka N’Kumu (b. 1990) is a mixed media artist who grew up in Kinshasha in the Democratic Republic of Congo and now lives and works in Cape Town. He uses oil paint, fabrics and found objects to create stories that exhibit a dynamic exploration of identity, culture and style that is deeply rooted in African heritage.

Designed as an interactive gathering rather than a standard lecture, this workshop invites guests to slow down, create with their hands, and engage with culture through both visual art and flavour.

Upon arrival, guests will receive a welcome drink, and explore Joël Mamboka’s studio space while viewing completed works and in-progress canvases. Afterwards, everyone gathers for a lunch prepared by the artist and his family, sparking conversation on heritage, creative practice, and food culture. A guided painting session follows, led by Joël Mamboka and a support team highlighting techniques, colour palettes, and cultural concepts.
