The Vessel and the Gaze is SEFARA’s inaugural ceramic exhibition, presented as part of Design Week South Africa 2026.

Across seven sculptural ceramic works, the exhibition explores how identity is seen, interpreted, reflected and transformed. Each work represents a distinct encounter between the self and external perception, examining the relationship between visibility, memory and self-recognition.

The exhibition will include an opening night on Friday, 9 October 2026, followed by a public viewing on Saturday, 10 October 2026.

SEFARA is an independent ceramic practice founded by Johannesburg-based multidisciplinary artist Kgaugelo Rakgwale. Emerging from a background spanning fashion design, visual art and digital design, SEFARA explores materiality, identity and perception through sculptural ceramics.

The practice examines the relationship between physical objects, personal experience and the ways identity is shaped through observation and interpretation. Through clay and the vessel, SEFARA investigates ideas of memory, transformation and the human experience of being seen.
