An Exploration of Joburg’s Alleyways

(Sunday, 14:30 – 17:00 | Ticketed R250)

Discover Johannesburg’s forgotten sanitary lanes with Mark Schaerer and Clare Chappel, architects and urban designers who are reframing Johannesburg’s alleys as vibrant destinations rather than forgotten places . See the layers and textures that tell the story of Johannesburg’s built environment and experience the creative ways that alleys are being reinvented by the community of Brixton using recycled materials, planting and imaginative surface treatments.

Join Mark Schaerer, Clare Chappel and Thorsten Deckler on Sunday 13 October on a walk through the alleys of Brixton as a part of Design Week South Africa, powered by Yoco.

The walk will begin and end at Breezeblock Cafe with a coffee and a chat. Zines with a map and information on Brixton’s alleys will be shared, as well as a Zine on the Mimosa School project.

The duration of the walk will be approximately two hours. Each participant will receive a little envelope of seeds to sow along the route as part of the Brixton rewilding program The walking route will include two Brixton alleys – activated by the community as event and exhibition spaces, places to play and gather.

We will stop at various landmarks along the way as well as at Thorsten’s architectural practice, artist Bronwen Findlay’s studio and Mark’s office. The walk will culminate in a presentation and exhibition of research into the history and future of Johannesburg’s alleys, with a focus on the Mimosa School project in Auckland Park and the alleys of Hillbrow.
