Discussion: South Africa’s Future Public Transportation Interchange

(Friday, 14:00 – 15:30 | Register for free)

The event, South Africa’s Future Public Transportation Interchange: Cape Town Train Station, is part of Design Week South Africa and Transportation Month. It will focus on the R1.5 billion redevelopment of the Cape Town Station Forecourt, exploring the future of transit-oriented development (TOD) and public-private partnerships (PPP). The event will examine the importance of making public transport hubs safe, efficient, and accessible, with Cape Town Train Station serving as a blueprint for future transport interchanges across South Africa.

Key themes include transit-oriented development (TOD), where public transport becomes central to urban planning, creating spaces that are walkable, bikeable, and transit-friendly. Public-private partnerships (PPP) between the City of Cape Town, PRASA, and private entities are crucial in driving the station’s transformation. The discussion will also highlight the need for safe passages to enhance commuter safety when walking to and from the station, through measures such as secure walking routes and improved lighting. There will be a focus on integrating active mobility, showing how cycling lanes, pedestrian pathways, and safer streets contribute to the success of transport hubs.

The event will feature speakers from PRASA, urban designers and the private sector who will discuss the strategy behind this significant redevelopment and its broader implications for cities across South Africa.

Register to attend here.
