Modular Parklet Activation at Cape Town Station Precinct
(Thursday – Sunday | Open event, free to attend)
As part of Design Week South Africa, we’re showcasing the first-ever modular parklet in the bustling Cape Town Station Precinct. While this installation is a celebration of public space, it also serves as a protest against the long approval process for parklets in the city, which are often reserved for private, commercial spaces. This parklet highlights the potential for public spaces to be transformed in response to community demand, showing how quickly and effectively urban spaces can be adapted.
Designed with sustainability and accessibility in mind, the modular parklet demonstrates how flexible, people-centric spaces can be introduced in high-traffic public areas. It challenges the notion that parklets should only benefit private interests and instead promotes the idea that public spaces can and should be shared by everyone.
Visit the parklet during Design Week to see how this dynamic and adaptable design can enhance mobility, create social spaces, and contribute to more inclusive, community-driven urban environments.
Partnering on this installation is Youth Capital, a campaign advocating for key policy changes to solve youth unemployment in South Africa. Meet the team on Thursday and Friday from 12:00 – 14:00 for #Thethangeunemployment, a conversation game that explores what’s like to grow up and dream in South Africa.
Let’s rethink how we use our public spaces.
