DJ set/performance by Hypocrite – Friday, 25 Oct
Hypocrite is a character devised and performed by Malik Ntone Edjabe. He is an embodiment of the principles of Freespace and the notion of a ‘changing same’ reality. Expanding on the Jamaican tradition of ‘toasting’, he straddles the space between DJ, emcee, dancer and hype-man. A believer in the power of love and the necessity of freedom of mind and spirit, he is a cunning jester with the ultimate goal of reflecting the inherent hypocrisy of all people, friends and enemies alike.

Live performance by Dead Symbols – Sunday, 27 Oct
DEAD SYMBOLS is a Cape Town based critical sound collective committed to dangerous thinking and sonic vandalism. The ensemble is comprised of Vusumzi Nkomo, Fernando Damon and Rowan Smith.

Founded in 2018, DEAD SYMBOLS situates its practice at the intersection of sound and theory; it is an inquiry, or study, into the sonic properties of theory, or sound as a theoretical intervention. The group’s work draws from the vast pool of Black critical theory to make sense of the World and contemporary society; it’s attendant order of knowledge and relations of power. Drawing from the poetics of and sonic interventions by various Black theorists and writers such as Amiri Baraka, Lesego Rampolokeng, June Jordan, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Nikki Giovanni, Lefifi Tladi, among others, DEAD SYMBOLS probes the existence and (il)legitimacy of systems of domination and relations of force, conquest, violence, representation, and their past, present and future spatio-temporal manifestations. By refusing to provide any soft landings, DEAD SYMBOLS meditates on the possibilities and implications and stakes of World-endings.
