Young Urbanists – together with the Mission for Inner City Cape Town – invite the public to a special site visit and open call workshop introducing Cape Town Toilets: a new initiative inspired by Tokyo’s celebrated public toilet programme and reimagined for African cities.
This interactive session will begin with a short walk through the Inner City with the CCID based on their Toilet Partnership to discuss existing public sanitation infrastructure and accessibility challenges, followed by an open conversation at the proposed pilot site. Participants – including architects, young people, designers, engineers, city officials, maintenance experts, disability advocates, and residents – will explore how design, policy, and partnership can come together to build safe, inclusive, and beautifully maintained public toilets for all.
The workshop will also unpack lessons from the Tokyo Toilets model and the Toilet project by the CCID with the City of Cape Town, focusing on architecture, maintenance, and transparency, and how these can inform a locally rooted network for Cape Town that combines aesthetic excellence with social impact.
