The Activation
This Garden Day, join Siyabonga Ndlagamandla, urban farmer and Friend of Garden Day, for a unique tour of the green spaces, creativity and community of Victoria Yards – in celebration of 10 years of Garden Day. In partnership with Design Week South Africa, this special event offers participants an immersive architectural and garden tour, hands-on flower crown making, and the chance to eat, drink and connect with fellow plant parents, design lovers and green-finger enthusiasts.
Victoria Yards, a historic creative hub in the heart of Johannesburg, has transformed from its early days as New York Laundry into a vibrant 20,000-square-meter space dedicated to art, artisans and community engagement. With a focus on food security, skill transfer and meaningful local impact, Victoria Yards provides the perfect backdrop for celebrating the beauty and benefits of gardens.
The Guide
Siyabonga grew up immersed in the natural world of KwaZulu-Natal, learning about plants, vegetables and traditional healing from his grandfather. Today, he runs Makers Valley Farm, a collaborative urban farming initiative in Johannesburg and is transitioning from hydroponics to organic farming with a focus on sustainable food production.
