The Activation

BLAQUE INQ Contemporaries presents an activation/ pop-up art exhibition feature of works by Lehlogonolo Masoabi. A is a visual artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is known for his printmaking and collaborative work with contemporary artists. He also works with drawing and painting. His work explores themes of thought, memory, identity, and experience. The pieces shown at this pop-up exhibition are specifically chosen to represent the artist’s skills and journey.

Masoabi views the human body not as a static form but as a dynamic collection of energies, particles, and traces, often depicted in a state of disintegration or integration. His pieces are built from layers of marks and fragmented text, sometimes sourced from cell phone messages and scripture, creating intricate and heavily blurred surfaces. The human form is represented through non-objective lines and marks, rather than a complete physical structure, emphasizing the complexity and intangible aspects of being. He incorporates graffiti-like patterns into his work, which also carry indecipherable text and convey a sense of distorted information over time. The creation of his art involves painstaking techniques like cutting relief prints, hand-cutting paper, and reassembling fragments, highlighting the strength and frailty of the materials.

The Artist

Masoabi’s art meditates on the mysteries of order, the complexities of life, and the power of information and how it can be distorted and reinterpreted. it is a bold exploration of our world’s complexities, a testament to resilience.
