The Activation
On Friday 11 October, Young Urbanists will host a walk to Lilian Ngoyi Street with the City of Johannesburg, the Department of Transport and the Johannesburg Roads Agency. We’ll meet at Park Station where we encourage all participants to take the Gautrain Gautrain together and then walk down Rissik Street to the site.
The visit is free and open to anyone interested in how our streets can be re-designed to be safer and more balanced for everyone. Lilian Ngoyi is one of Joburg’s most important corridors and is now being rebuilt as part of the City’s Complete Streets Framework following the 2023 gas explosion.
- 10:00 – 10:15 AM meet at the Gautrain Park Station (we will share more info on the day).
- 10:15 to 10:25 walk towards Lilian Ngoyi (formerly known as Bree St) as a group.
- 10:25 to 11:15 explore and talk about the new street design.
- 11:15 to 11:35 walk back to Gautrain Park Station and finish
This event, part of the Design Week, is a chance to see how urban design and civil engineering can be used to promote how design, safety, and transport planning are coming together in South Africa’s biggest city.
