The Activation
As part of Design Week South Africa, Young Urbanists and Urban Think Tank Empower (UTTE) invite you to a rare public site visit of the Soweto-Caracas Community Centre in Khayelitsha — a landmark project redefining how architecture can drive community-led change.
Developed through the Empower Upgrade Model, the Centre integrates a rooftop farm, multi-purpose sports court, crèche, coworking hub, and off-grid systems powered by solar energy — all designed and built with the local community to support social, environmental, and economic resilience.
This is the first time the Centre will open to the public, and spaces are extremely limited to only 39 participants. Each attendee will contribute R50, with all proceeds donated directly to the Khayelitsha community.
Loop Taxi will provide transport from the UTTE office, departing at 11:00 (arrival by 10:45) and returning at 13:00. If you cannot afford the participation fee but wish to join, please contact Roland Postma at [email protected] directly to make arrangements.
