The Activation
An isometric grid allows for the depiction of three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional plane. Paul Edmunds makes use of that in these drawings, but they remain open-ended — straddling structure and formlessness, surface and illusionism.
Willem Boshoff’s exploration of form and language in his carved Blind Alphabet provided some inspiration, and Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings are never far away from his studio. Closer to home, it was at EST Graphics in the late 1990s that Edmunds first encountered isometric graph paper, when Bree Street could still support small, independent businesses. He has since recreated the paper for these works, anchoring the series in memory, material, and place.
Presented as part of Design Week Cape Town at the Open City Architects, 163 Bree Street, the exhibition invites visitors to explore how geometry, craft, and recollection intersect on the city’s changing grid.
