The Activation

More than just a landscape of places, Joburg is a receptacle for the memories of millions of people. ‘Mapping Memories,’ developed by writer Cate Otto and professor and graphic designer Rozina Vavetsi, consists of two parts:

• An interactive installation: a large-scale map of the city invites visitors to identify personal, meaningful locations, write a vivid memory, and pin it on the map, creating a colorful collective experience of Joburg’s vibrant essence. As more memories are added, the map transforms into a living archive that becomes richer with every participant.

• A creative workshop: memories are explored by combining writing, design, and crafts to delve into the textures, tastes, smells, colors, and sounds of remembrance. Through verbal and visual expression, the workshop aims to create zines that showcase the collective and evolving portrait of the city’s identity and encourage participants to reflect and connect through the power of shared memory.

Both events are free, but RSVPs are required for the exhibition opening and the workshop.

The Brand

Joining their creative forces, writer Cate Otto (University of Johannesburg) and professor and graphic designer Rozina Vavetsi (New York Institute of Technology and University of Johannesburg) have developed the ‘Mapping Memories’ project, celebrating Joburg’s contagious energy and vibrant spirit.
