SUMMARY:CRITICAL ENDANGERED ACTIVATION BY FRAUKE STEGMANN
DESCRIPTION:The Activation\n\n\n\nThrough a series of collaborations and ongoing activations\, I want to tell the multifaceted story of habitat loss affecting the Critically Endangered Cape Flats Sand Fynbos. In an increasingly fragmented proto-habitat\, which greatly increases the risk of local extinctions\, underappreciated land areas – such as indigenous remnants\, commons\, roadside verges\, servitudes for power lines and undeveloped land on farms – have emerged as unexpected heroes and vital defenders of the Critically Endangered Cape Flats Sand Fynbos. These areas create essential corridors that allow the movement of animals and the dispersal of plant seeds between conservation areas.\n\n\n\nI am very excited to announce the first collaboration in this series of activations with type designers Henrik Kubel and Scott Williams @a2_type @a2swhk at @designweeksouthafrica 2025\, a national celebration of ideas\, experimentation\, and creative exchange.  \n\n\n\nDesign Week brings together designers\, makers\, thinkers\, and brands redefining progress\, proving that innovation can be restorative\, not extractive; collaborative\, not competitive; and that true progress only matters when it’s shared. \n\n\n\nSet in New Rail Alphabet\, type face design by Henrik Kubel & Scott Williams. \n\n\n\nFrauke Stegmann X Scott Williams and Henrik Kubel/A2TYPE \n\n\n\nwww.studiofraukestegmann.com / @fraukestegmann

SUMMARY:DESIGN AS AN OPTIMISTIC ACT BY NOW NOW / EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:The Activation\n\n\n\nDesign as an Optimistic Act – is our first physical exhibition\, hosted as part of Design Week South Africa – inviting you to experience the imaginative potential of African architecture across rural villages\, townships\, cities\, and international sites.\n\n\n\nThis tactile exhibit offers an immersive journey through the NowNow Competition’s 40 Honourable Mentions\, collected across four thematics over the past two years\, each rethinking how we live\, learn\, and shape space.\n\n\n\nRooted in the notion of “Design as an Optimistic Act\,” the exhibition plays on the layered meaning of “now now\,” a phrase blending urgency\, presence\, and the playfulness of African time. Visitors are invited to step inside\, touch\, feel\, and discuss ideas that reveal not just the design\, but its intention\,  why these competitions and places matter.\n\n\n\nHosted by the team behind Pot Plant Club and Babbi Deli & Bar on Bree Street\, the event opens their space to new intersections of design\, as we look ahead – we share a collective space for remembering futures\, reclaiming the optimism and energy of African cities\, and affirming that the next great idea can come from Khayelitsha\, Gaborone\, Langa\, or just down the road.\n\n\n\nOpen the Design Week South Africa map \n\n\n\nWhere: Pot Plant Club\, 215 Bree Street \n\n\n\nWhen: 24 October\, 18:00 – 22:00 \n\n\n\nBookings: Open to all.

SUMMARY:FOLLOW HER heART-BEAT OPENING / EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:The Activation\n\n\n\nCurated by Dieudonné Elohym & Kabambi MbiolaFollow Her heArt-beat draws inspiration from “Fuata Moyo\,” Swahili for “Follow the Heart.” Based on this philosophy\, the exhibition honours women whose influence and presence persist in shaping our creative and personal paths\, showcasing a selection of female artists whose works reflect courage\, memory\, and emotional richness. This exhibition serves both as a tribute and a dialogue. It honours the women who raised\, taught\, and inspired us\, and acknowledges those whose dreams were interrupted\, whose expectations we could not always meet\, yet whose lessons endure within us. Through their multiplicity of stories\, we recognise that womanhood\, much like art\, is never linear; it is rhythmic\, complex\, and profoundly unique. The heArt-beat becomes a metaphor for the pulse of creation\, acting as a bridge between art and everyday life\, past and present\, dreams and reality. It also connects to the melodies\, songs\, and poems that accompany artistic processes\, reminding us that memory and emotion often manifest through sound.Ultimately\, Follow Her heArt-beat asks: What happens when we follow her heart\, her art\, her rhythm? Where do these women’s stories lead us? Within the spirit of Fuata Moyo\, the exhibition invites us to listen closely and follow the pulse that connects us all.“Heaven is at the feetof those who know the mother within.Mothers are the pathways to dreams.I live the dreams of my mother.and her motherAnd her mother…”– Lebogang Mashile in Burn Out: A Rant (Flying Above the Sky\, 2008).\n\n\n\n@fuata_moyo / @elohym_inart \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: 109 Plein St\, Cape Town City Centre\, Cape Town \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOpen the Design Week South Africa map \n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday 23 October 18:00 – 21:00 \n\n\n\nBookings: Register to attend here.

SUMMARY:FOOD FOR LANDSCAPES: RECIPES FOR SLOW DISASTERS / EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:The Activation\n\n\n\nJoin artist Andrew Merritt\, collaborator Loubie Rusch\, and participants from the Lynedoch Valley for a conversation exploring recipes for biocultural repair. Visitors will be invited to sample flavours and discuss the project’s evolving map and foods of regeneration – asking questions such as “What food does the landscape need?” and “How can shared acts of making and eating restore broken relationships between people and place?”This interactive event is part of the wider exhibition throughout Design Week (23 to the 26 October) at Church House that is free and open to the public.Developed in collaboration with Loubie Rusch of the Sustainability Institute in Lynedoch\, the installation emerges from a field activation in the Lynedoch Valley where local participants traced the changing relationship between people\, place\, and food across time. Through maps\, tasting samples\, and visual artefacts\, the work reveals how colonial agriculture\, climate pressures\, and social inequalities have reshaped the valley’s ecological identity – and invites the public to consider what it means to cook\, eat\, and design for landscape healing. The exhibition is supported by the British Council\, Design Week South Africa\, and the Centre of Excellence in Food Security.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: Church House\, 1 Queen Victoria St\, Cape Town City Centre\, Cape Town \n\n\n\nOpen the Design Week South Africa map \n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday 23 October at 10:00 – Sunday 26 October at 16:00 \n\n\n\nBookings: Open to all to attend. SUMMARY:STREET EXHIBITION: ISOMETRIC DRAWINGS WITH PAUL EDMUNDS / EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:The Activation\n\n\n\nAn isometric grid allows for the depiction of three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional plane. Paul Edmunds makes use of that in these drawings\, but they remain open-ended — straddling structure and formlessness\, surface and illusionism.\n\n\n\nWillem Boshoff’s exploration of form and language in his carved Blind Alphabet provided some inspiration\, and Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings are never far away from his studio. Closer to home\, it was at EST Graphics in the late 1990s that Edmunds first encountered isometric graph paper\, when Bree Street could still support small\, independent businesses. He has since recreated the paper for these works\, anchoring the series in memory\, material\, and place.\n\n\n\nPresented as part of Design Week Cape Town at the Open City Architects\, 163 Bree Street\, the exhibition invites visitors to explore how geometry\, craft\, and recollection intersect on the city’s changing grid.\n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday\, 23 October from 8:00 – 17:00 \n\n\n\nWhere: Open City Architects\, 163 Bree Street\, Cape Town \n\n\n\nOpen the Design Week South Africa map \n\n\n\nOpen to all.

SUMMARY:GADAT HOUSE AMALAHLE: A VAAL STORY SCREENING / ACTIVATION
DESCRIPTION:The Activation \n\n\n\nShot in 2024 and now internationally nominated\, Gadat House is thrilled to invite you to an intimate\, exclusive screening of Amalahle: A Vaal Story on 12 October. Presented at Mamakashaka during the prestigious Design Week\, the project explores the paradox of tradition and modernity through a high-fashion lens\, examining the complex relationships between those without and those with\, how we define luxury\, and how to tell local stories through fashion. For one night only\, attendees can explore the garments from the project\, learn about the origins of the brand\, connect with the cast and crew\, and join a post-screening discussion on independent brand building and storytelling. The Brand\n\n\n\nGadat House is a luxury brand founded in Johannesburg\, born from a desire to redefine luxury- not as something exclusive to the West\, but as something rooted in our local environment and community. \n\n\n\nThe brand ensures that the profits from high-fashion\, well-crafted\, ready-to-wear\, and custom garments circulate back to empower the people and communities essential to the industry.\n\n\n\nBy platforming voices that are often unheard or unacknowledged in high fashion\, Gadat House confronts the lack of representation\, particularly the scarcity of appointed women creative directors\, by creating its own platforms and opportunities. \n\n\n\nUltimately\, the brand tells African stories visually\, through a distinctly high-fashion lens.\n\n\n\nwww.gadat.co.za / @gadathouse \n\n\n\nWhere : Mamakashaka\, 5 De Beer Street\, Braamfontein\, Johannesburg \n\n\n\nOpen the Design Week South Africa map \n\n\n\nWhen : Sunday\, 12 October from 5.30pm – 9.00pm \n\n\n\nBookings: Register to attend

SUMMARY:PRICE OF GOLD / EXHIBITION & TALKS
DESCRIPTION:The Activation\n\n\n\n7 artists and 4 designers with roots in a variety of mediums and practices contribute to a fictitious design of a future Johannesburg. Regenerative yet conciliatory with the city’s history and physicality. Different experiential works frame existing narratives iconic to the city through a forward-looking lens. A position that argues for the innovation and ingenuity of the people’s tools. Using materials\, sound\, spatial design and archival fragments to paint an imaginative picture of how the city looks. Contending with hegemonic narratives of a modern African future and delving into real life examples of innovative material realities that speculate an African future of ingenuity.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Artists\n\n\n\nJack Markovitz is a director and photographic artist based in Johannesburg. His work is built on a deep trust between him and his subjects\, with an aim to create honest\, archival depictions of the world as he sees it. His award-winning films and photographs have been shown in Berlin\, Barcelona\, Mexico City\, Johannesburg\, Netherlands\, New York\, Paris and London.Khumo Morojele is a Johannesburg based designer and art director\, his practice deconstructs his city’s post apartheid landscape through upcycling and artisanal craft. Reinterpreting pre-existing materials and memories into speculative garments where he makes sense of the present and proposes new cultures for the future. \n\n\n\nThato Nzimande is a creative director and stylist whose work embodies building a world of speculative African surrealism through the use of historical and present iconography. Her projects are deeply informed by her bi-continental perspective\, with an aesthetic that bridges African sensibilities and contemporary global pop culture influences.  \n\n\n\nKlein Muis\, born Aidan Jayson Peters\, stands as an award-winning designer\, focused on fashion design and product design. Muis’ artistic journey is guided by a commitment to a research-driven\, design ethos. Rooted in the belief that innovation arises from a deep understanding of culture and conflict. Klein Muis endeavors to prioritize problem-solving through the reinvention of established norms. Each garment\, every product\, and every idea carries the weight of purpose\, addressing challenges in a sustainable manner and leaving an indelible mark on the intersection of art and functionality.  \n\n\n\nFrancesco Mbele is a multidisciplinary artist based in Johannesburg. Everything can be transformed\, deformed and obliterated by light\, through Francesco Mbele’s practice he uses it as his paint brush for image making. Mbele’s work straddles between the fine line of pop culture and social commentary\, as he attempts to straddle it like the untrained horse it is. \n\n\n\nOratile Papi Konopi is a multi-disciplinary visual artist\, curator\, and exhibition maker from Johannesburg. Konopi’s practice poeticizes and highlights the nuances of everyday lived experiences of  often-overlooked subjects. Through his artistic body of work\, Ênê\, an anthology of artworks that invite people to think and talk about the complexities of themes such as identity\, gender and sexuality\, romance\, and faith. Exploring how these experiences are mediated through language & culture. Through his work\, Konopi listens to stories and narrates allegories of what it is/ was/ could to be yourself in place(s) that are diverse and in constant change. \n\n\n\nKutlwano Makwela is a Johannesburg-based artist whose sculptural practice combines metalwork and storytelling through reclaimed materials. Her work often focuses on the power of women and ancestral knowledge\, transforming industrial waste into figures that embody memory and spirituality. Curated by Nkhensani Mkhari  \n\n\n\nProduced by Zano Nkosi  \n\n\n\nProducer + Artist manager Neo Lekhu  \n\n\n\n@kwamischronicles / @papikonopi / @franadilla / @thegmni / @kmorojele / @klnmuis / @jackmarkovitz / @neothebabe / @zanonkosi / @nkhensanimkhari \n\n\n\nImagery by Jack Markovitz \n\n\n\nCollaborators and sponsors: @bose / @respect_your_elders / @primalspirits / @shanticullis / @franasonic / @frndly_sa / @iheartjozi / @primalspiritsdistillery / @shwelebana / @jozimyjozi  \n\n\n\nWhere : Victoria Yards\, 16 Viljoen Street\, Lorentzville \n\n\n\nOpen the Design Week South Africa map \n\n\n\nWhen : \n\n\n\nExhibition\, 10 October\, 10 – 4pm\, 11 October 10 – 4pm. \n\n\n\nTalks\, 10 October 3 – 4pm\, register to attend\, 11 October 10 – 4pm\, register to attend.

SUMMARY:LEHLOGONOLO MASOABI X BLAQUE INQ CONTEMPORARIES / EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:The Activation\n\n\n\nBLAQUE INQ Contemporaries presents an activation/ pop-up art exhibition feature of works by Lehlogonolo Masoabi. A is a visual artist based in Johannesburg\, South Africa. He is known for his printmaking and collaborative work with contemporary artists. He also works with drawing and painting. His work explores themes of thought\, memory\, identity\, and experience. The pieces shown at this pop-up exhibition are specifically chosen to represent the artist’s skills and journey.\n\n\n\nMasoabi views the human body not as a static form but as a dynamic collection of energies\, particles\, and traces\, often depicted in a state of disintegration or integration. His pieces are built from layers of marks and fragmented text\, sometimes sourced from cell phone messages and scripture\, creating intricate and heavily blurred surfaces. The human form is represented through non-objective lines and marks\, rather than a complete physical structure\, emphasizing the complexity and intangible aspects of being. He incorporates graffiti-like patterns into his work\, which also carry indecipherable text and convey a sense of distorted information over time. The creation of his art involves painstaking techniques like cutting relief prints\, hand-cutting paper\, and reassembling fragments\, highlighting the strength and frailty of the materials. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Artist\n\n\n\nMasoabi’s art meditates on the mysteries of order\, the complexities of life\, and the power of information and how it can be distorted and reinterpreted. it is a bold exploration of our world’s complexities\, a testament to resilience.\n\n\n\n@blaqueinqcontemporaries / @hlogiart \n\n\n\nWhere : Keyes Art Mile\, 21 Keyes Avenue\, Rosebank \n\n\n\nOpen the Design Week South Africa map \n\n\n\nWhen : Open for public viewing from 2 October. \n\n\n\nArtist Walkabout on Thursday\, 9 October at 18:00 (includes a free glass of wine)

SUMMARY:'MAPPING MEMORIES'\, INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION & CREATIVE WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:The Activation\n\n\n\nMore than just a landscape of places\, Joburg is a receptacle for the memories of millions of people. ‘Mapping Memories\,’ developed by writer Cate Otto and professor and graphic designer Rozina Vavetsi\, consists of two parts:\n\n\n\n• An interactive installation: a large-scale map of the city invites visitors to identify personal\, meaningful locations\, write a vivid memory\, and pin it on the map\, creating a colorful collective experience of Joburg’s vibrant essence. As more memories are added\, the map transforms into a living archive that becomes richer with every participant.\n\n\n\n• A creative workshop: memories are explored by combining writing\, design\, and crafts to delve into the textures\, tastes\, smells\, colors\, and sounds of remembrance. Through verbal and visual expression\, the workshop aims to create zines that showcase the collective and evolving portrait of the city’s identity and encourage participants to reflect and connect through the power of shared memory.\n\n\n\nBoth events are free\, but RSVPs are required for the exhibition opening and the workshop.\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Brand\n\n\n\nJoining their creative forces\, writer Cate Otto (University of Johannesburg) and professor and graphic designer Rozina Vavetsi (New York Institute of Technology and University of Johannesburg) have developed the ‘Mapping Memories’ project\, celebrating Joburg’s contagious energy and vibrant spirit.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhere : AA Gallery\, 27 Boxes\, Melville \n\n\n\n\n\nOpen the Design Week South Africa map \n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Exhibition Opening\, Thursday\, 9 October from 6pm – 10pm \n\n\n\nRegister to attend. \n\n\n\nWorkshops\, Saturday\, 11 October and Sunday\, 12 October from 11:00 to 13:00 (Space limited to 15 people in each workshop.) \n\n\n\nRegister for Saturday\, 11 October here. \n\n\n\nRegister for Sunday\, 12 October here. \n\n\n\nInteractive exhibition\, Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday (9\, 10\, and 11 October) from 11am to 4pm \n\n\nCape Town\, Exhibition\, Experience
